Bugs don't like Geraniums

I feel instantly happy having completed the planting of 24 geraniums.  I love the big showy flowers and the fact they bloom all summer long, even here in North Texas garden zone 7b.  Our summer temps are extreme - mid 80’s -107°. Geraniums stand up to our hot drought season, like full sun but thrive in pots on my shaded patio, and the another big reason is that they deter insects.  Spiders, flies, mosquitos don’t like them.  Come to think of it, the squirrels don’t bother them either!

I put red in the front yard flower beds and pink in the back.  I used my Home Depot Garden Club coupon for $10 off my over $50 purchase. (I also bought dirt, mulch and seeds) It’s early spring, but come take a look at my garden progress.  There will be mulch covering the drip hose that will help hold the moisture during our hot summer and the yellow mums are starting to show up in the pots.

  2. Yes they do, as do several other beneficial plants like marigolds, lemon mint, sage, rosemary...

  3. I really have to try geraniums this summer. I am sick of arbustorum, which eats everything but couch grass. Maybe they would leave geraniums alone

  4. I have read that copper helps with snails, but I haven't tried it. I did see some cool garden ornaments covered with copper pennies. If you plant geraniums, let me know if they are bothered by your arbustorum.

    1. Geraniums does really well in pots on the patio or by the front door which is a good location to discourage bugs from coming inside.

  8. I love geraniums, I always have quite a few growing in pots on the patio and I also love to plant them in beds. I wasn't aware that they detered bugs though. Thanks for the tip - I'll have to plant all that many more, lol....Cathy

  9. I've always liked geraniums, but hearing this, I think I like them even more! My husband and I have our first full summer in our first house this year and are planning on sprucing up the yard. I may just have to throw these on the list!!! (With his permission, of course. It's hard to argue with him since he's a professional landscaper with a horticulture degree...I just point out what's pretty...)
    Thanks for sharing!!!

  10. Beautiful and so nice to have flowers going already. :) I like that the bugs and critters don't like them..... I feel like I should have known that, but didn't realize it..... I seem to always have some geraniums each year and I appreciate learning this bit of info. Thank you for sharing.
